Faculty Teaching and Research
The Mills College Art Museum (MCAM) supports research and teaching with visual art across the Northeastern University Global Network, engaging faculty, researchers, and classes from the humanities to the natural sciences, business, and engineering. We collaborate with faculty to integrate art into teaching and research, making the museum a meaningful resource for their work and their students.
Class Visits to Exhibitions
We welcome class visits to our exhibitions! We believe visual art can serve as an effective entry point into discussions pertaining to any class theme, as artists are exploring the very same global issues that students study in class.
Faculty can select to have a guided visit with Art Museum staff, or they can facilitate their own in-gallery activity. During guided visits, we place an emphasis on sustained close-looking, open-ended interdisciplinary inquiry, and active learning.
Students develop their visual literacy, practice observational and oral communication skills, solve problems, and think critically and creatively.
The Art Museum will open its doors for class visits no matter what time the class is scheduled. You are not restricted to the gallery’s public hours (Tue-Sun, 11am-4pm; Wed, 11am-7:30pm).

Teaching with the Permanent Collection
At the Mills College Art Museum, the collection anchors our teaching and scholarship, shaping opportunities for interdisciplinary study and dialogue. Students and faculty encounter original works of art as catalysts for research, coursework, and experiential learning across Northeastern.
Faculty anywhere across the Global Network can integrate artworks from the collection into their courses. MCAM staff are here to provide support and expertise in selecting and preparing materials to meet your specific curricular goals. We can create customized portfolios of artwork based upon your course themes and subject matter that can be easily accessed through MCAM’s collection database.

On-site Class Visits to the Collection
We invite faculty and other Northeastern instructors to request class visits to view works from our collection not currently on view in the gallery. Our classroom space provides an intimate setting for close looking, discussion, and collaborative exploration. MCAM staff will work with instructors to design customized class visits.
Faculty Research with the Permanent Collection
We are here to help facilitate research on, or research that uses, works in our permanent collection. On-site research appointments are available to scholars from Northeastern as well as from outside the University. During appointments, MCAM staff provide access to requested works of art.
We also encourage research using our complete digital collection database, that includes hi-res digital image files of every work in the collection.
